An ABC Success Story: Blackhall Road over Rum Creek
ABC

Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods can drastically improve an outcome for the client and community. BlackHall Road (CR661) over Rum Creek, located south of Atlanta in Henry County, GA, is a two-lane collector that provides access between suburbs and primary arterial and interstate accesses in the region. This project involved the removal and replacement of a structurally deficient bridge carrying CR661 over Rum Creek. The project site is tightly constrained by residential land uses and the 600-acre Lake Spivey. An earthen dam impounds Lake Spivey with a concrete spillway, immediately upstream of the bridge, forming the headwater of Rum Creek. The existing 108-foot, three-span pile bent supported bridge was replaced with a 195-foot, three-span structure, including a 93-foot long main channel span using innovative ABC methods and materials. The project initially assumed a 9-month road closure and off-site detour. Responding to public input, innovative ABC techniques were implemented that reduced the road closure to just 60 days.
